Have you seen this movie? My wife and I went this last Saturday and were both entertained and inspired. The Kendrick brothers have consistently put out quality movies, all with strong biblical messages, and this is no exception. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth the ticket, or at least get the DVD when it comes out.

The subject is Prayer. It’s obvious from the title of the movie that the focus of prayer is battle. Indeed we are in a battle; a battle with many fronts. A battle for the souls of the lost. A battle against our flesh nature–that sinful tendency within us that wants to rebel against godliness. A battle against the schemes of the powers of darkness. These battles are not in a foreign country, distant from your everyday life, they are in our face. Or rather, in the heart and every aspect of our lives. They are in our relationships, in our workplace, in our church, in our prayer time, and everywhere else.

John Bunyan’s book: The Holy War, illustrates where spiritual warfare takes place, how critical it is, and what is at stake. In this work,

“…Man’s soul is figured under the simile of a town, which having surrendered to an insidious and mortal enemy, is besieged by its lawful Sovereign with all the ‘pomp and circumstances’ of war; the arch-enemy is driven out, the town retaken, new-modelled, and garrisoned by Emmanuel.” The editor, George Offor, calls it an “extraordinary book, manifesting a degree of genius, research, and spiritual knowledge, exceeding even that displayed in the Pilgrim’s Progress.”

This book helped me understand spiritual war on a new level, and especially in the true biblical context. Yep, I strongly recommend it. Click on the link above for a free online version or order a paper version.

Prayer and Spiritual Battle:

There is a part of prayer that is like a war room. I have found that the solitude time with my God is first and foremost the place of fellowship, of holy communion. What goes on in this time of communion with the Triune God is an entirely different universe than what goes on in the world. In fact, I refer to this quiet time as the universe of prayer. It is where God and I commune, where He is the focus and everything else is put into its true perspective, which is under His sovereign reign.

If you enjoyed this movie and you’re inspired to pursue a disciplined life of prayer, I have a few immediate recommendations.  Read your Bible, researching the scriptures on the subject of prayer. Let God’s word teach you and anchor your theology on this subject. Check out some of my previous posts. My blog has mainly focused on this subject, teaching and encouraging the body of Christ to pursue intimate communion with our God. Here are a couple of blog posts:

If you are wanting to learn more on the subject of prayer, and learn how to develop a personal time of solitude with God the Father, I recommend the following:

Bunyan, John. A Discourse Touching Prayer. This is a link to  free online version of the book.

My book, The Place of Prayer. This is a fiction/non-fiction that teaches and shows how to find that universe of prayer.

One of the best things about the movie–War Room, is that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is upfront, clearly explained, and shown in power. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is WHY or HOW we are able to be in a right relationship with the one and only true God. It’s all because of Jesus!  Love it!
